As temperatures climb Oak Park Apartments would like to recommend some simple tips to help keep your apartment and you as cool as possible.
If you do not have a window air conditioning unit here are some helpful suggestions:
- Close the blinds on any and all windows that face south, east and west.
- If you can, invest in sun blocking curtains – they will keep your rooms color in the summer and warmer in the winter. Plus you can take the curtains with you when and if you move.
- Keep windows closed tight during the heat of the day and ventilate at night when the temperature dips.
- If the temperature at night is 77 degrees or less open your windows and use a window fan to circulate the cool night air into your apartment.
- Turn on your ceiling fan and make sure they are running counter clockwise.
- Place a bucket of ice under your ceiling fan.
- Run the dishwasher at night.
- Get rid of incandescent lights – they not only use more energy, they generate a lot more heat than CFL or LED light bulbs.
- Turn off other heat generating electronics that you’re not using.
- Avoid turning on the stove or oven.
- Drink plenty of icy fluids.
- Bring an ice pack to bed.
If you have air conditioning window units follow these suggestions:
- Make sure to clean filters for the best efficiency.
- Properly install and seal around the window unit.
- Reduce humidity but don’t use a dehumidifier when you are running your unit, it makes the air conditioner work harder.
- Keep the thermostat set at 78 degrees or higher if using ceiling fans.
- Don’t air-condition unused rooms.
- If you are leaving your apartment for more then an hour, turn off the air conditioning unit.
- Use timers on your units.
