Tips to Ensure Your Move to a New State Goes Smoothly

Moving is stressful. Moving to a new state adds a whole new level of stress to the equation.  Before, you box up any of your belongings follow these tips to ensure your move to a new state goes smooth.

Visit

Visit the state you plan on moving to at least once before you move. Research the various neighborhoods that interest you and then once you are there get out and explore! See if the area you are interested in moving to has a visitor center and then go visit . Ask questions about housing, career opportunities, social life, cost of living, transportation, etc.. the people who work at there are a wealth of knowledge.

Housing

Once you have decided where you would like to live look online for available apartments that are in your price range.  Contact the property management companies to schedule tours, ask questions and decide on where you want to live.

Moving Companies

Choosing a moving company doesn’t have to cause panic.  Ask family and friends for companies they would recommend then double check any online reviews.  Don’t accept an estimate over the phone or online.  Insist that the companies you contact complete a written, on-site estimate. Ask that they provide proof of insurance and a copy of their business license as well. Read any contracts and do not sign if the contract is not complete.

Utilities

Ask your new property management company for utility service contact information and schedule any required appointments. Don’t forget to cancel the services at your current apartment.

Miscellaneous

Contact your postal service to have your mail forwarded to your new address. Visit the DMV to register your vehicle, get a new driver’s license and license plates. And make sure to register to vote.

Once You Move

To feel connected join an activity, club or volunteer at a charity. New interests will keep you from feeling lonely and help you make new friends in your new state.

Planning and preparation are the best ways to avoid the stress and problems of any move but especially one that crosses state lines.
