Oak Park has retained its’ top green community ranking from the Environmental Protection Agency scoring a 91.9% in the green power challenge!
The green power community challenge was established in September 2011 and is a national, year-long campaign that encourages communities to use renewable energy.
What does that almost 92% score mean for Oak Park? It means that our local government, residential and business electricity comes from green power sources. Oak Park tracked our communities “green” power usage and won in the category of “community that has the highest percentage of green power.”
How did Oak Park accomplish this environmental challenge? By switching electricalsuppliers and demanding a carbon neutral electric supply. Oak Park became the first municipality in Illinois (and maybe even the nation) to choose an all-green powerportfolio as a standard for businesses and residents alike.
By competing (and winning) this challenge 2 years in a row Oak Park has effectively reduced its’ carbon footprint as well as supporting Oak Park’s very own environment and energy commission’s mission of promoting energy efficiency and conservation.
Way to lead the pack once again Oak Park!
