Free "Night at the (Art Institute of Chicago) Museum"

Hey Oak Park Apartment tenants and fellow Oak Parkers… come to Free Thursday Nights at the Art Institute of Chicago .  The museum is offering free admission from 5-8 pm on Thursday nights through May 26 (this is being generously underwritten by Target).

The Art Institute of Chicago decided to offer different free-admission days throughout 2011 to entice more local folk to take a advantage of the fabulous cultural offerings right in their own backyard. Starting June 1, the museum will be free all day on the first and second Wednesdays of each month.

Just as an fyi the Art Institute of Chicago was founded in 1879 as both a museum and school. The museum opened at its present site (Michigan Ave & Adams St) in 1893 and is built on the rubble from the 1871 Chicago fire. The Institute’s original goal was to “acquire and exhibit art of all kinds” as well as to “conduct programs of education.”

Today, the museum houses more than 300,000 works of art and the school’s graduate program is continually ranked as “one of the best in the country.”  I’d say goal achieved!
